Me? A Servant?

A Servant! Who wants to be a servant?

As you consider possible vocations and future careers, is servant in the list of possibilities?

As Christians, that is exactly what we are called by Jesus to be, whatever vocation or career we might choose. It may take some transforming of us and our attitudes to see the possibilities, some changing in the way we look at things, in the renewing of our minds. Jesus washed His disciples' feet, and then said that we are to wash each other's feet. We are to serve others with the same love and concern with which Jesus served us.

There are a number of words in the New Testament that describe our Christian service. One means "slave," implying ownership to a master. We belong to Jesus who bought us out of slavery to sin, death and the devil, with the price of His own blood., His life given on the cross. Another word is used to describe serving the physical needs of others by waiting on tables. A third word literally means "underrower" and gives a picture of service as learning from and following the leadership of the helmsman.

As you pray about and consider the vocation or career in which you will serve the Lord and His people, our Concordia University System and Seminary Admissions offices are here to serve you with information about the many paths to serving within the church. Never underestimate the joy in serving. What a way to make a difference!
